Enjoy the Festival of the Souls in Mérida

Event to keep our ancestors' memory alive.

2022-11-14

The Day of the Dead is a festivity that fills all of Mexico with marigolds. Mérida is one of the most creative cities internationally and stands out for celebrating cultural events and how they keep traditions alive from the cosmovision of the ancestors.

That is why the Mérida City Hall organizes the Festival de las Ánimas (Festival of the Souls). Below, we will tell you all the event details so you can book your stay in hotels in Mérida, such as Künük.

What is the Festival of the Souls?

If you plan to stay in the hotels in Mérida during the Day of the Dead festivities, you should not miss the Festival de las Ánimas. This is an event that has become a tradition.

The event's objective is to honor the memory of the deceased with different activities that celebrate the traditions of the Maya people. These are oral, folkloric, and, of course, gastronomic.

This festival begins on October 24 and ends on November 2. It will start with a photographic exhibition that will capture, through images, various moments of Yucatecan traditions. This festival is the perfect excuse to learn about the peninsula's culture.

On the other hand, various activities will be presented throughout the week, among them the stories of mysteries of the Maya underworld. In the Plaza Grande, you can enjoy a Monumental Altar of more than 14 meters wide, representing how the Yucatecans honor their dead during these festivities.

Enjoy the Paseo de las Ánimas.

On October 28, the traditional "Paseo de las Ánimas" will take place, one of the most important events of the Day of the Dead festivities or Hanal Pixan, known in Yucatán. This walk begins at the General Cemetery on the way to San Juan Park.

On this walk, "ánimas" dressed in regional costumes participate. You can enjoy stands of antojitos and regional sweets, as well as the artistic performances that take place during the tour of the ánimas through the city.

Get to know the Mayan ball game.

Another activity you can enjoy if you stay at Künük, one of the best hotels in Mérida, is the representation of the Pok Ta Pok Maya ball game. This can be seen in the main square of the city.

This ball game represents the battle between the forces of good and evil, as well as the cycle of life and death. Because of this, the City Hall will make this representation for the festivities that will take place at 8:00 p.m. in front of the Cathedral.

Catrinas Parade.

As if that were not enough, during these festivities, the City Hall will also organize the Catrinas Parade on Saturday, October 29. This will culminate on Paseo de Montejo, in the now traditional Noche de Catrinas. So if you want to see representations of Catrina's imaginary, this event will be the best option.

On the other hand, on Sunday, October 30, you can delight your palate with the fifth edition of the Mucbipollo Fair, which will take place at the San Sebastián softball field.

These festivities will end with dancing to the rhythm of Yucatecan folklore in the basement of the Municipal Palace, where the ánimas, pixans of the dead, will visit us, according to the imaginary of the Maya culture.
