What is the Reyes Tizimín Fair, and why should you visit it?

2023-01-17 | merida

If you are staying in the historical center hotels in Mérida for the beginning of the year, you must know the Reyes Tizimín Fair, which is celebrated on January 6th and is held in commemoration of the day of the Three Kings through local theater programs, livestock exhibitions, beauty contests and other religious festivities that will fill the main streets of the city with celebration and reflection for this new period.

This celebration is commemorated every year in the municipality of Tizimín, located two hours from the hotels in Mérida taking the highway to Motul that allows you to arrive directly to the place where the magic of the last Christmas holiday is celebrated with one of the essential cultural displays, the most important event being the breaking of the Rosca de Reyes, a Mexican tradition full of fraternity, flavor, and joy.

What is there to do at the Reyes Tizimín Fair?

Generally, this festivity lasts a total of two weeks, in which different activities are distributed, such as dances, theatrical shows, musical productions, and art exhibitions, among others, allowing you to enjoy the first fifteen days of the year with all the joy and happiness that characterizes Mexico and Yucatán. This year's 2023 edition will be cultural shows from January 1 to 16, with many surprises for the family.

Thus, you can schedule your visit to the Fair on any of these days, planning every detail to enjoy everything this event has to offer, from entertainment, fun, gastronomy, and culture, such as the crowning of the queen or the countless number of local restaurants known for their exquisite dishes of Maya origin and a great variety of tamales, enchiladas, mole, among other delicacies of Mexican and Yucatecan cuisine.

You can also take advantage of your visit to the Fair to learn more about this municipality, which is home to one of the largest and most important Mayan ruins reserves in Mexico, allowing you to see the rich cultural heritage, which blends harmoniously with the incredible natural diversity represented in the beautiful jungles and cenotes that characterize the region.

The Rosca de Reyes.

It is a fruit dessert made with sweet dough and frosted and crystallized pieces of various colors; it is also filled with cream, truffle, or chocolates in which there are surprises of all kinds, such as plastic figurines and ceramics.

As such, this roscón is a Spanish tradition, but it has managed to blend well with pre-Hispanic and Latin beliefs, becoming a fundamental element in developing these festivities, being a synonym for equality, family union, and celebration. The event is served on the night of January 5 and the morning of January 6, Three Kings Day, where a slice is given to each family member and experiences are shared.

Various people can come up with all kinds of figures that seek to represent the Catholic-Christian Christmas tradition. Still, the most important is that of the baby Jesus, who will be in charge of inviting those present to the celebration of tamales on Candlemas Day, celebrated in February, allowing you to have an excuse to get together with family and friends who share during the fair in Tizimín.

What to expect from the Reyes Tizimín Fair 2023?

The Reyes Tizimín Fair 2023 promises to be one of the largest in the last decade, projecting the visit of more than 800,000 people, including locals and tourists, making it one of the most significant events in the country. It will also feature 50 livestock exhibitors from all over Mexico and different cultural groups that will try to showcase Mexican traditions at their best, as we do at boutique hotels in Mérida.

Some of the most outstanding guests include the "Tierra Nueva" band show, which is a tribute to Sonora Santanera, one of the most important musical groups in all of Mexico in the tropical music genre; electronic presentations with DJ Fito Silva from Monterrey and international singers such as the Spanish Ana Cirré.

In turn, every corner of the municipality will be surrounded by craft stores, restaurants, and cultural displays designed to catch your attention and have a pleasant memory of the most important event in the region to kick off 2023. That is why we recommend you book in the historical center hotels in Mérida to have the opportunity to access the direct transportation that will take you to this fair and start the year 2023 in the best way.
